Week 6 Tchaikovsky and Person of the Week:
Please respond to both of the following, using sources under the Explore heading and the textbook as the basis of your response:
- Select one (1) composition by Tchaikovsky that you enjoy. Describe the music and subject matter and explain why you enjoy it and why it is still popular today. Passionate nationalism, like Tchaikovsky’s for Russia, is a feature of Romantic art, music and late 1800’s art. Give an example of modern music (besides national anthems) that is characterized by nationalism.

- Video clip of Tchaikovsky (1812 Overture) at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrsYD46W1U0
- For week 6 your person of the week choices are between Emerson and Thoreau, American writers and philosophers (Transcendentalism) and Manet, Morisot, Renoir or Degas, artists who broke new ground in France with their painting techniques. Look at the pictures and information in our text and online and then choose the one person you feel is most important. Give us some details about your person and a picture to support your decision!

RE: Week 6 | Discussion
Hello class and Professor,
I enjoyed the composition Romeo and Juliet. It reminded me of “The Simms” computer game I played as a child. When the animated people would kiss this song played. It was also in some old love movies. The song is upbeat and beautiful. This would be popular today for weddings and back ground music for events. God Bless The USA by Lee Greewood is a great example of a modern song about nationalism. It talks about how lucky we are to be free and most all American’s have heard it.
I chose Emerson as this weeks most important person. He was considered the “father of transcendentalism.” I find his views on organized groups very interesting. He wanted to live his own life in the way he felt it should be lived. He was known for promoting individualism which is to me, a very important thing to promote. Aside from us having similar views, I found his artwork to be stunning. This piece reminds me of a being standing tall alone, their is gusts of wind trying to sway the being,
