Congratulations! This is your first lesson planning assignment. 1st step, Lead-in – I ask students if they have ever been on a flight that was uncomfortable. After getting an idea or two – bad weather, crying babies, etc. – I will ask them to talk to their partner about an uncomfortable flight. What was the problem? They discuss for 5 minutes. Then I gather a few ideas.
nd step, Pre-teach essential vocabulary – Select 5 words from the article and explain how you would review them with students.
rd step, Reading for main idea – Develop a main idea question. Write out your instructions that make it clear that the students must read quickly to answer this question. What will you say and do? What will the students say and do?
th step, Reading for detailed comprehension – Decide on how you will check students’ comprehension. If you decide to provide a series of multiple-choice or short-answer questions, write those questions. If you use another strategy, explain it in detail.
th step, Follow-up – Provide a way for students to react to the ideas in this article by talking about them. This might be a discussion, debate, ranking, or role-play. Provide your instructions for this task.
